Walking Football League Flourishing

Walking Football League comes to the home of Surrey FA, and we catch up with two key figures.

The Surrey FA Walking Football League matchday 2 came to the home of Surrey FA for its third season.

17 teams from around the county made the trip to Meadowbank Football Ground for a day of the fastest growing form of football.

With the addition of the 68+ league this season it has given the opportunity for expansion of the game which has flourished instantly.

Mark Blythe, organiser of the Surrey FA Walking Football League said, “This year it is amazing that we are able to have a 50+, 60+ & 68+ leagues.

“We have asked the guys what would you do if you weren’t playing walking football. They said read a newspaper and watch tv so the benefits it has is paramount.

“The friendships we have is fantastic, they meet up together, go on tour and go to gigs together.”

It's been a life saver

Denis Thomson, walking football advocate said, “I started playing walking football when I was 65/66.

“I then had a heart attack and I thought this is it for me but three months later I’m back on a pitch again so it’s been a life saver for me.

“It gives me two or three times a week of exercise I need to keep everything going. It is tremendous!”
