Specsavers Surrey Senior Cup First Round Recap

Three teams hit for five, two seven goal thrillers and a Surrey’s sole Football League side scrape through on penalties.

The journey to Meadowbank has only just begun, but for many of the sides entering Surrey’s premier cup competition, their dreams of silverware are already over. There has been plenty of drama over the last two months. Find out more about the competition so far in our Specsavers Surrey Senior Cup first round recap.

The first tie of the round saw National League South outfit Dorking Wanderers complete a comfortable 5-0 win against Abbey Rangers at Meadowbank Football Ground.

Kingstonian were the last Surrey team left in this season’s Emirates FA Cup after reaching the second round. They carried their fine cup form into the first round of our flagship competition, making light work of Knaphill in a 5-1 win.

Struggling Vanarama National League side, Sutton United found form in the cup, brushing aside Horley Town with a comfortable 3-0 victory, scoring all three inside 49 minutes.

Guildford City, AFC Wimbledon and South Park FC all needed the dreaded penalty shootout, this year introduced after the full-time whistle, to get past their respective opponents. There was no need for penalties in Colliers Wood United and Badshot Lea’s goal-fest. The visitors came out on top in a seven-goal thriller with a 4-3 triumph.

Elsewhere, Virginia Water fell foul of AFC Croydon Athletic in their own backyard with a 2-1 home loss. Chipstead also progressed into the next round away from home, overcoming Cobham with a narrow 1-0 victory at Leg O’Mutton Field.

High-flying Woking FC enter this year’s competition as favourites, vying for promotion to the Football League. They narrowly edged out last year’s Buildbase FA Vase winners Chertsey Town at the Laithwaite Community Stadium to get themselves into the next round.

Just down the road from Surrey FA HQ, Leatherhead FC made the most of their home advantage, beating Raynes Park Vale 2-0 progress.

There was still drama left in the cup with a second seven goal epic finishing in Sutton Common Rovers’ favour, toppling Westfield 5-2.
