Tim Robinson Takes Centre Stage at Annual Referee Event

Surrey FA’s annual Referee Event, sponsored by Sports Officials Consultancy, took place on Thursday 27th October with over 100 referees attending...
At this year’s invitation only event we were privileged to be joined by Select Group 2 Referee - Tim Robinson. The Select Group 2 is a group of 18 match officials refereeing within the Championship since the start of this season and 32 year old Tim was selected having only been a referee since 2002.

Tim has exemplified how to progress from grassroots football refereeing to the professional game in a short space of time, and was a prime example to those from the Surrey FA Referee Development Group who were in attendance. Not only this, but Tim’s experience in the game was also beneficial to all those that attended.

Tim, a former teacher from Middleton-on-Sea, discussed - amongst other things – his highs and lows in the game so far and what life is like as a professional referee in the game. Tim’s presentation and workshop on the night was based on when and how to apply the advantage clause, using video clips of his own performances and other professionals, to illustrate both poor and good practise of the clause. As his presentation drew to a close, Tim spent time to undertake a frank and honest question and answer session who asked questions ranging from video technology to promotion.

After a short interval, Janie Frampton (Director of Sports Officials Consultancy), discussed the benefits to e-learning and how former World Cup referee, Howard Webb, had utilised some of the platforms and modules that Sports Officials micro site encompasses. Janie discussed how Sports Officials Consultancy has developed the e-learning platform to assist with refereeing awareness and perception, as well as the tutorials and video demonstrations that the modules offer to members. Click here for more details on the unique platform offered by Sports Officials Consultancy, which many Surrey FA registered referees are already signed up to.

Tim Lawrence, Referee Development Officer at the Surrey FA, summed up his thoughts of the evening by commenting: “It was an inspirational evening where all those that attended benefited from the learning points that they can put into practise when they next officiate. My sincere thanks go to Janie Frampton for sponsoring this very worthwhile annual event.”

Surrey FA would like to thank Tim Robinson and Janie Frampton for being our Guest Speakers at the event and also for giving up their valuable time and to all of the referees that managed to attend. We hope to see you all back in 2017.
