The highly acclaimed and successful Surrey FA Development Group was created as a joint venture between Surrey FA and the Referee’s Association in January, 2003 by David Crick and Vic Skilton.
Since the inaugural meeting of the group, every group member has achieved development in their performance and the group has produced great success stories.
A selection of referees that have progressed through the Surrey FA Development Group are:
David Hutchinson is the current lead of the Surrey FA Development Group, with the aim of encouraging and motivating referees within Surrey to achieve the highest levels of football.
The Surrey FA Development Group consists of Level 4, 5, 6 & 7 referees identified by the Surrey FA, aged 30 or below, who referee Saturdays and midweek matches. To join the group, referees must have the aspiration to obtain promotion to higher levels with the view of potentially turning professional.
Potential candidates are interviewed prior to joining the group to ensure we have a group of likeminded referees. Such is the success of the group that many of the Level 3 referees – who have progressed on to the Football League and National League still attend our group meetings, providing inspiration, guidance and advice to those currently in the group due to the invaluable experience they can provide.
We encourage the newly promoted Level 3`s from the group to continue to attend meetings and act as Referee coaches as they have huge amounts of current experience to offer their peers.
Currently (as of the 2016-17 season) there is a total of 15 referees in the Surrey FA Development Group, each with their individual ‘Referee Coach’ to develop their game further.
Firstly, conduct of referees that are members of the Surrey FA Development Group is closely monitored and scrutinised. Referees who are then selected for membership are expected to:
• Be a member of the Referee’s Association
• Show commitment to the group by attending Surrey FA Development Group events
• Communicate regularly and efficiently with their Referee Coach and Development Group Co-ordinator
• Manage administration effectively and answer correspondences quickly
• Keep Referee's Secretaries (League, FA and County FA) informed of their open and closed dates
• Conduct themselves in a professional manner on and off the field
• Maintain their fitness by living an appropriate lifestyle
• Set goals and monitor their performance using self evaluation
• Maintain the highest levels of commitment to achieve their goals
As well as the benefits already stated above such as guidance, support and progression in the game, there are numerous other benefits of being part of the Surrey FA Development Group.
Group members have the opportunity to officiate at international tournaments due to the connections we have attained and the quality of referees that we produce. Members of the group have been selected to officiate at the Iber Cup (Portugal), Dana Cup (Denmark) and numerous other tournaments in Europe and beyond.
Five Surrey FA Development Group meetings take place each season alongside regular training sessions in Guildford and match visits to watch and evaluate the performances of other officials in Surrey.
