Adam Bessent Interview

Virginia Water FCs manager previews the Specsavers Surrey Senior Cup Final

The Specsavers Surrey Senior Cup Final is set to be played on Wednesday 3rd May 2023 between Virginia Water FC and Metropolitan Police FC at Meadowbank Football Ground. We sat down with Virginia Water manager Adam Bessent to find out more about their season and their hopes for the final.

What would it mean to win the Specsavers Surrey Senior Cup?

It already means a tremendous deal to everyone involved at the club just getting to the final. I believe it’s our first Senior Cup Final in our 100-year history. It's a prestigious competition with Football League and National League clubs as previous winners and competing teams this year. As a Step 5 side, if we were to go on and win it, I think it would have to be the biggest achievement in the club's history.

How would you sum up your season?

We've had a very good one. It's my first season in charge, taking over from Ceri Jones (now Director of Football), hard shoes to fill especially after all his achievements over 7 years. With his help, Chairman Dave McBride and the rest of our management team, we assembled a good squad over the course of the year. A very respectable 7th placed finish in the league, our road to this Final and a Semi Final in the Southern Combination Cup to come. We aimed to have a comfortable mid-table season and improve in the cup competitions. We have done that and more.

What are you expecting from your opponents?

We've watched them and they're a strong Step 3 side with lots of quality in their squad. No doubt it will be a fast, direct start and we will have to be ready for that. They are obviously two leagues above us and inevitably their players are faster, stronger and have greater technical ability than those we face week in, week out. We faced a similar challenge against Leatherhead last month, we embraced that one, knocking them out at the Quarter Final stage of the Southern Combination Cup. No doubt we will embrace an even tougher challenge against Metropolitan Police.

Do you have a message for your supporters?

First and foremost, it's thank you. We're a small club punching above its weight in our league, let alone the county. Our supporters are families, friends, volunteers and ex-players. Our brilliant group of lads have already given them some great moments this season. Tonight, will be a big test for them but regardless of the result, I believe they'll make our supporters proud once again. I hope they all enjoy the occasion and the game. Up the Waters!
