We’re partnering up with other organisations, such as Active Surrey, MIND, English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) and Sainsbury’s to provide mental health and disability-related workshops and CPD events throughout May. See below for details on the events.

Inclusive Communications - engaging with disabled sportspeoples

Monday 8th May, 6-9pm, Guildford

The way organisations talk, the words used, the tone of voice and even body language can affect any user's opinion of a sport or fitness provider and most of all, their trust in them.  Learn more on this thought provoking course from EFDS (English Federation of Disabled Sport).

Making Leisure Centres More Accessible

Wednesday 10th May, Woking Leisure Centre

Working with Freedom Leisure, Motor Neurone Disease Association and Parkinson’s UK Active Surrey are running a workshop for leisure centre staff on how to adapt gym sessions for people living with either of these neurological conditions. Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity Workshop

Tuesday 23rd May, 6pm-9pm, Surrey County FA, Dorking

The three-hour workshop was developed by the mental health charity MIND with support from Sports Coach UK, and is designed for players, coaches, sport administrators, volunteers and front of house staff.

What's covered?

MIND has listened to people living with mental health problems and people working in the sport and physical activity sectors to create a practical workshop that will help you: 

  • Understand common misconceptions about mental health and the impact of stigma and discrimination
  • Identify the positive impact that being active has on physical and mental health
  • Appreciate the barriers that stop people getting active
  • Talk confidently about mental health
  • Know where to signpost people to if they need support
  • Identify practical actions to make your service more accessible for everyone

 Cost: This course is free of charge, and drinks and snacks will be supplied.

Active Surrey’s Inspiring Inclusive Sport

Tuesday 23rd May, 6:30-9pm Dorking Halls, £10

Active Surrey are hosting an Inspiring Inclusive Sport evening. Aimed at those who are currently coaching athletes with disabilities, or those wanting to make their sessions more inclusive. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear from a range of speakers with different expertise around dealing with disability and disability coaching.

The evening is designed to help coaches develop their confidence in delivering inclusive sessions, provide physical activity opportunities to those with disabilities and encourage clubs and coaches to engage in inclusive sports, to help make physical activity in Surrey accessible for all. Including the option to attend a workshop run by UK Deaf Sport on Supporting deaf sports participants or to listen to a number of local guest speakers from different projects and organisations and ask them questions in mini Q+A sessions.

Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training Programme

Tuesday 30th May, 10am-1pm, Woking Leisure Centre

The Inclusive Community Training Programme is a creative, informal and informative workshop designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who can support disabled people to be more active. The workshop is designed for those who currently do or would like to support disabled people of all ages within the community.

Throughout a 3 hour workshop, supported by online resources, you will:

  • Learn about practical tools to support inclusive delivery
  • Explore creative ideas to support disabled people to take part in physical activity and sport

  • Learn about local groups, activities and further training opportunities

Cost: this workshop is free of charge.
