what is the respect programme

The Respect Programme is The FAs programme to address unacceptable behaviour in football, both on and off the pitch. Surrey FA are proud supporters of the Respect Programme and actively support and encourage our clubs ro promote the programme’s message.

why are we supporting the programme

With referees vital to the game and over 1,000 registered referees in Surrey, it is with regret that statistics year on year suggest that thousands of referees nationally are leaving the game because of abuse from players and the sidelines.

With over 80,000 players taking part in the game in Surrey, and a vast number being youth players, it is a concern that statistics suggest many children stop playing the sport because of the attitude and actions of over enthusiastic, pushy parents and the behaviour of certain players at clubs.

In response, the Respect Programme provides a series of tools for leagues, clubs, coaches, referees, players and parents from grassroots to elite football to ensure a safe and positive environment in which to enjoy the game. Surrey FA are keen to promote and support any Respect events that clubs, leagues and organisations are undertaking in the county. We are one of the leading County FAs in England in terms of the around of registered referees that we have, many of which have gone on to referee professionally at the very highest level. As part of being a registered Surrey FA referee, we strongly advise our referees to complete the Respect Programme interactive learning course which provides good practice and guidance. This will ultimately improve your ability to control certain situations which you may encounter during a match.

On completion of the course you will be able to print off or save a copy of the certificate which must be sent to Surrey FA’s Referee Development Officer Tim Lawrence ( You will also receive iron-on Respect Programme badges for your refereeing kit upon completion of the course.
