Practice their ABC’s

Chessington Community College was the venue for a training evening for Kingston primary school teachers. Twenty one teachers from across the borough attended the event on Monday 1st March which offered support on delivering sporting activities during curriculum and after school hours. Whilst part of the content was football specific the key message of the evening was the importance of the fundamental movement patterns for children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Challenging and providing opportunity for children to experiment and practice with movements skills such as running, hoping, jumping, dodging in a fun environment is essential for children to develop skills that transfer to a wide variety of sports.

At the two hour work shop teachers were given information regarding how football activities can be delivered to meet the four key strands of the National Curriculum. Acquiring & Developing Skill, Selecting & Applying Skills Tactics and Compositional Ideas, Knowledge and Understanding of Fitness & Health, Evaluating & Improving Performance. Teachers were given practical examples of how to implement this information managing a class of thirty children whilst also managing the individual abilities with in a class of thirty.

The event was organised by Richard Gunney of the Surrey County FA and delivered by Ben Bartlett who is the Regional Coach Development Manager (5 – 11 Years) for the South East.
