on the King George V Pavilion

On 4 January 2010 at King George V Playing Field, North Holmwood, work officially started on building a new community pavilion. Jean Pearson, Leader of Mole Valley District Council (MVDC), and members of North Holmwood Football Club got the works off to a good start by making the first cuts in the turf.

Members of the King George V Pavilion Working Group, local councillors, MVDC mascot Merlin the Mole and Surrey Football Association all turned out to celebrate the start of the build.

The pavilion is the result of efforts by the local community, North Holmwood Football Club, MVDC, and Surrey Football Association as well as successful bids for grant funding from the Football Foundation, Bishop of Guildford's Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation and fundraising by North Holmwood Football Club and the King George V Pavilion Working Group.

The new building will support a Football Development Plan for the site which is being implemented by North Holmwood Football Club in partnership with MVDC and the Surrey Football Association. The overall aim of this Plan is that the building and the development of the football club will ensure that local people will have the opportunity to play football in a safe environment with the appropriate facilities.

The build will take approximately 26 weeks with the pavilion ready mid July to early August 2010. When complete the pavilion will provide two team changing rooms, two official's changing rooms, kitchen/servery and storage for equipment. The pavilion will also include ground source heat pumps to help reduce the carbon footprint of the building which underlines the Council's corporate priority 'Creating a Better Environment' and is a further commitment to the Council's Carbon Management Programme.

Councillor Janette Purkiss, portfolio holder for Community and Youth, said "This pavilion will provide a much needed facility for the communities of Goodwyns, Chart Downs and North Holmwood, and should encourage participation in sport and outdoor recreation on this important playing field. Our particular thanks go to North Holmwood Football Club and the King George V Working group for their commitment and effort in realising this pavilion, and the Football Foundation for contributing a large amount of funding. We really hope the local communities benefit from this and get involved with the North Holmwood Football Club to make this a success."
