FA Youth Review and 9v9 Football

As a result of the FA Youth Review, it has been suggested 9v9 Football could become mandatory for Under-11s and 12s in the near future.

This latest proposal, taken from Your Kids, Your Say research and which is due to be voted on in April, would come into effect in the 2013/2014 season, and follows on from the success leagues in Surrey have already had who have implemented this change.

The Surrey County FA are asking Leagues, Clubs and Local Authorities to be flexible with regard to marking out pitches - specific sized pitches (80 x 50 yards) are great but pitches can be marked out inside existing 11-a-side pitches, or outside Mini-soccer pitches using portable goals.

We have been consulting with Local Authorities on the demand for 9v9 football since March 2010 and are regularly updating them as more leagues opt for this format of football.

The preferred size of goals are by 16 x 7ft but 21 x 7ft are also acceptable where they are already in situ.

We have negotiated discounted goals through Mark Harrod, while the Surrey County Playing Fields Association (SCPFA) give small grants of up to £800 - contacts for your area can be found in the Related Documents section of this page.

The Sport England Small Grants Scheme can also help and can provide 100% funding for grants for goals of up to £10,000.
