1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in First Aid for Sport

Is the FAS for me?

If you are an adult (over 16 years of age) with a sporting background or you are studying for a sports science or sports therapy qualification and want to learn more about first aid, then the FAS is designed for you.
Although the FAS has been developed in partnership with The FA, it is a generic first aid qualification offering content appropriate to all sports. The FAS is more than a standard first aid qualification, as it offers an introduction to injury prevention and management.
You should hold a current Emergency Aid Certificate (or equivalent).

What can I use the FAS for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a first-aider for an amateur sports club.
  • To progress on to the Level 2 and then Level 3 Certificate in the Treatment and Management of Injury in Football (L2/3TMI) and, ultimately, on to The FA Treatment and Management of Injury Diploma. For more information on this, please telephone The FA’s Medical and Exercise Science Department on 020-7745 4900.

If you are working in the sport environment, perhaps as a coach or match official, then the FAS can be used as Continuous Professional Development.

What will I learn?
Your learning programme will allow you to:

  • understand the principles of providing first aid in sport
  • recognise and respond to illness and injuries in sport.

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the approved centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • An induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment.
  • A learning programme encompassing both the theory and practice of first aid in the sporting context.
  • A programme of assessment spread across the course, including observations, by an appropriately qualified assessor, of your application of first aid in a simulated environment.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

What will my assessment involve?

The FAS assessment will require you to:

  • arry out three four-minute simulated practical first aid scenarios, during which you will be observed. These will include additional oral questions on your knowledge and understanding
  • sit a 30-minute written theory paper covering the knowledge and understanding requirements of the qualification
